About Amelia Edith Barr- Best Selling Author Born in Yorkshire, England 1831, died in New York 1919. By 1885, Richmond Hill had a bona fide celebrity as a resident. Amelia Edith Barr had been, among other things, governess to the children of Texas governor Sam Houston before moving to New York in 1867, where she began writing novels. She moved to Richmond Hill, NY because illness had claimed the lives of some members of her family. A great advocate of Women's Rights, she was one of the earliest activists who campaigned for equal pay for women who performed equal jobs as men. Amelia Huddleston was born in Yorkshire England, lived in Scotland with her husband John Barr, and after his bankruptcy went to New York. From there they went to Chicago and finally Texas, where she survived the Galveston hurricane. She moved to New York and began writing for publication in about 1870, writing poems, essays, and novels. Of her 42 published novels, she is best remembered today for Remember the Alamo. SCOTSMAN writes: "Mrs. Barr's stories are always pleasant to read. They are full of sweetness and light." GLASGOW HERALD writes: "In descriptive writing, in simplicity and gracefulness of style, and in perfect mastery over her characters, Mrs. Barr can hold her own with any living English novelist." The story takes place on the shores of West Ross in the castle Tasmer of the Torquils. ...
